The need for more women in leadership roles has never been more critical, but despite the benefits of equal representation, significant legal, structural, and cultural obstacles persist.Although India witnessed an increase in the number of women taking up CEO roles in 2021, 4.7% women CEOs against 3.4% reported in 2018, there was also a decline in board chairs held by women in 2021. For some, this might be a reason for optimism, but change in the corporate world is painfully slow. Now more than ever, companies and change advocates must take an active role in pushing for greater representation and ensuring that the capabilities of such women are recognized and rightly rewarded.
Bringing a unique perspective to a traditionally male-dominated space is just one of the wayswomen can effect change. Having more women in positions of influence is not only critical to the career advancement of other women, but itcan have a broader societal impact on pay equity, changing workplace policies in ways that benefit both men and women, and helping companies to attract a more diverse workforce.
Gender equality can even have apositive impact on GDP per capita that grows over time. In fact, closing the gender gap in the workforce could add a staggering $28 trillion to the global GDP.
