Keter brings its enduring sustainability commitment to life in multiple ways. First, this global consumer lifestyle solutions leader fabricates quality outdoor furniture, storage sheds, garden boxes, and other outdoor accessories. Each resin-based product contains an increasing percentage of recycled materials. In addition, each Keter product is completely recyclable. Besides its globally available consumer lifestyle products, Keter expresses its sustainability commitment in other positive ways.
Keter’s Landmark Green Spaces Initiative
To illustrate, Keter’s Green Spaces initiative desires to “make communities greener through connection and education.” In May 2022, Keter Chief Executive Officer (or CEO) Alejandro Pena and other Keter associates took bold action on this mission. Together, they visited Florida’s North Miami Elementary School during Teacher Appreciation Week. Personnel from The Education Fund of Miami-Dade County were also on hand.
As a longtime sustainability advocate, Alejandro Pena wanted to infuse Keter’s innovative spirit into an “outdoor classroom” (aka a colorful vegetable garden). With support from the Food Forests for Schools program, Alejandro Pena laid the groundwork to take the elementary school’s garden to the next level. First, Keter donated 25 items to form the garden’s structure.
The Vegetable Garden Takes Shape
Keter’s donations included all-weather raised garden boxes, storage sheds, deck boxes, and sturdy outdoor furniture. The Evotech raised garden boxes are key, as they provide better drainage and warmer soil while limiting weed growth. The storage sheds are ideal for tool storage, and the deck boxes provide overflow storage and seating space. The all-weather furniture offers comfortable seating for gardeners who want to take a welcome break.
Together, Alejandro Pena, Keter associates, and Education Fund volunteers positioned raised garden boxes, storage sheds, and deck boxes at strategic spots around the garden. Several teal-colored Keter Adirondack chairs captured the vibrant South Florida flavor. While volunteers built the garden, elementary school students listened to teachers explain how vegetable plants grow.
By all accounts, Keter’s first Green Spaces project was a huge success. In this outdoor “immersive classroom,” young students can get a firsthand look at plant cultivation and growth. During the process, they’ll learn about environmental stewardship in terms they can understand. Over time, these students may become the next generation of green spaces and sustainability advocates.
3 Sustainable Partnerships with Keter’s Global Communities
As an international consumer lifestyle solutions leader, Keter regularly supports initiatives in the communities in which the firm operates. The Keter Sustainability Report 2023 spotlights three 2023 partnerships that demonstrate Keter’s enduring sustainability commitment. Keter supports each partnership with cash or product donations. Keter employees also volunteer their time during the initiative.
Keter CEO Alejandro Pena affirms the significance of these mutually beneficial collaborations. “When I became the CEO of the company, it was evident to me that we were not just a company with a purpose of creating value for our shareholders, but a company that has multiple stakeholders and multiple purposes…One of our responsibilities is not just to our shareholders, but to the communities that we’re in and to the environment and world that we live in,” Alejandro Pena remarked.
United States: School-Based Garden Spaces that Nurture Environmental Stewards
Keter partnered with the FoodCorps non-profit to generate funds for school-based garden spaces. Ideally, children who learn how a garden grows will be future stewards of the environment. Watching seeds sprout, and viewing seedlings’ rapid growth, can help children better understand the natural world around them.
Keter donated raised garden beds, storage sheds, and storage products for each garden project. Colorful Adirondack chairs, placed in the garden, invite children to sit and gaze at the vibrant green spaces around them.
Canada: Ronald McDonald House Serenity Garden and Outdoor Sanctuary
Keter teamed with Ronald McDonald House CharitiesR in the South Central Ontario region. Together, the partners refreshed the home’s outdoor sanctuary, serenity garden, and children’s play area. Keter donated storage sheds and storage products to the cause. Keter’s colorful Adirondack chairs provide a comfortable place to rest and reflect. Indoors, Keter’s donated home organization products help give everything its own place.
In 2024, Keter plans to continue supporting this worthy non-profit organization. Next, the Keter team will upgrade the Ronald McDonald House CharitiesR herb garden. Keter CEO Alejandro Pena appreciates the opportunity to help uplift Ronald McDonald House CharitiesR residents and their families.
Israel: The Scouts Partnership’s Massive Plastics Recycling Project
Keter’s ongoing “Doing Good with Plastic” initiative sparked a recycling partnership with Israel’s 90,000-strong Scouts organization. Together, the partners wanted to educate young people about plastics recycling and its potential applications. The joint goal was to reroute landfill-bound plastics to recycling centers.
In 2023, the Keter-Scouts team established plastic collection points in 12 adjacent communities. Local residents also received important recycling information. The team’s efforts paid off as they collected 1.5 tons of plastic items from residential households.
Together, team members sorted and recycled the countless plastic items. Next, team members converted the plastic into products for the Scouts clubs and instructors. In 2024, Keter will add more communities to this highly successful program.
Keter’s Multi-component Sustainability Strategy
As a major player in the consumer lifestyle solutions sector, Keter manufactures and distributes its products to the global marketplace. While Keter continues to expand, CEO Alejandro Pena is pursuing the firm’s mission to “minimize the use of virgin resources and eliminate waste at each stage of the value chain.”
Not surprisingly, Keter continues to make substantial progress on this challenging goal. The company’s three-part sustainability strategy begins with an ever-increasing percentage of recycled materials in production operations.
Next, Keter’s technology investments enable lower production-related energy consumption. The company is also taking steps to reduce production-linked greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, Keter’s manufacturing facilities continue to make strides in decreasing production waste. In 2023, Keter achieved its lowest-ever waste levels, with a few plants reaching their “zero waste” targets.
Finally, Keter’s ability to better estimate product demand minimizes product deliveries that increase greenhouse gas emissions. This enables consumers and retailers to access desired products while enabling Keter to reduce its carbon footprint.
Keter’s “Win-Win” Global Business Strategy
Keter CEO Alejandro Pena is confident that Keter can achieve its innovation and business goals while continuing to positively impact the environment. “One of our pillars is not only that we are going to be a business driven by innovation and a leading company in our industry, but that we are also going to live by the values of being good to the environment and being good to our communities. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because I also believe that it will be a source of competitive advantage over the long term,” Alejandro Pena concluded.
